If you were in a situation similar to Achak's, would you want to be taken to America or another country? Would you want to stay as close to home as possible with hopes of return? Where would you try to go?
Obviously my perspective will be biased on this question based on the nature that I was born/raised in the states. I do think though that america and it's freedom would be hyped in places like a refugee camp or any country that does not have democracy/freedom. Knowing about america and all of the "dreams" that come with it, I am sure that that is why millions of people (37.5 million people total in 2006) choose to immigrate. also on a side note did you know that the opposite of immigrate is emigrate? If i chose to emigrate from the U.S. I might go euro...but I have no idea if I were in Achak's situation.
i finished the book. and i think my decision on where to go would depend largely on where i thought my family was. and, if i felt that i was alone, i would probably try to go far away.
as i followed achak's story, i became more anxious everywhere he "settled". i felt like the war was following him. if i ever felt that way, im fairly confident i would ask to be flown to the opposite end of the earth.
(hello - connecticut to guam. and it didnt even take a war!)
